Addition practice that feels like a puzzle

In a number pyramid every brick is the sum of the two bricks under it. Some bricks start filled in, and the rest are up to you. It is a lovely way to practise adding and subtracting with totals from about 10 up to a little over 100 without it feeling like a worksheet.

Younger children can begin with three rows and small numbers, while older ones can take on six rows where one answer leads to the next. Each press of New puzzles makes a fresh set, and every pyramid has exactly one solution.

Questions, answered

How does a number pyramid work?
Each brick is the total of the two bricks directly under it. Look for a brick whose two neighbours in a triangle are known, then add them, or take one away from the total, to find the missing one.
Does every pyramid have only one answer?
Yes. Each pyramid is checked as it is made, so the numbers you are given fit exactly one way of filling it in. You never have to guess.
Do I need algebra to solve them?
No. Every pyramid can be finished with adding and subtracting alone, one brick at a time. Hard just gives fewer starting bricks, so each step has to unlock the next.
Which size is best for kids?
Start with 3 rows on Easy. The numbers stay small, with the top brick never above 20. When that feels quick, move on to 4 rows, then 5 and 6.
What changes between Easy, Medium and Hard?
Easy fills in more than half of the bricks, Medium fills in fewer and uses bigger numbers, and Hard gives only as many bricks as the pyramid needs. Three rows has Easy and Hard.
Can I print a whole booklet?
Yes. Pick up to 10 pages with 1, 2, 4 or 6 pyramids on each, and tick the box to add answer pages at the end. Choose US Letter or A4 before you print or download.
