A word search made for your list

Most printable word searches are fixed. This one is built from the words you give it, so it can match this week's spelling list, a birthday theme, or a rainy-day puzzle for the grandchildren.

Pick a list for kids (farm animals, ocean life, dinosaurs) or for adults (garden flowers, spices, travel), then change anything you like. Smaller grids with Easy settings suit early readers. A 20 by 20 grid with backwards words keeps a crossword fan busy for a good while.

Everything happens in your browser. Your words are not sent anywhere. Once the puzzle is done, colouring it in with highlighters as you find each word is half the fun, and our free colouring pages make a good reward for finishing.

Questions, answered

Is the word search maker free?
Yes. Make as many puzzles as you like, print them or download the PDF. There is no sign-up and no watermark.
Can I make a word search with my own words?
Yes. Type or paste your words, one per line. Spelling words, names, vocabulary and party themes all work. Words need at least 3 letters and must fit the grid, and the maker tells you when one does not.
What do Easy, Medium and Hard mean?
Easy puts words in rows and columns, reading left to right or top to bottom. Medium adds diagonals. Hard also hides words backwards, which is a good challenge for older kids and adults.
Does the PDF include an answer key?
Yes, by default. The second page shows the same grid with every word shaded. Untick the answer key option if you only want the puzzle.
Will it print on Letter and A4 paper?
Yes. Choose US Letter or A4 before you print or download, and the puzzle is sized for that sheet.
Can I get a different puzzle from the same words?
Press Shuffle. The words are placed in new spots with new filler letters, so you can print a different puzzle for each child or each round.
