Fences: one loop through every dot

A fences puzzle is a grid of dots with a few pieces of fence already in place. Your job is to finish a single closed loop that passes through every dot exactly once, without crossing itself. It needs nothing but a pencil and a little patience, and the moment the loop closes is very satisfying.

Every puzzle here is made fresh and checked so that it has exactly one answer. Small grids are quick enough for a car ride or a waiting room, while the extra large ones can fill a quiet afternoon. Press New puzzles for another set at any time.

Questions, answered

How do you solve a fences puzzle?
Draw one closed loop that visits every dot once, moving only up, down, left or right. Some pieces of the loop are already drawn. Start where a dot has only two ways out, such as a corner, because both of those lines must be part of the loop.
Does every puzzle have only one answer?
Yes. Each puzzle is checked by a solver as it is made, so there is exactly one loop that fits the lines already drawn. If your loop works, it is the loop.
What is the difference between Easy and Hard?
Easy draws more of the loop for you, and every next line can be worked out from what is already on the page. Hard draws fewer lines, so you will sometimes need to try an idea and look a few moves ahead.
Why can't I pick every grid size?
A loop that visits every dot has to alternate between two kinds of dots, so the grid needs an even number of dots overall. We offer square grids with an even number of dots on each side: 6, 8, 10 and 12.
Is this good for kids?
The Small 6 by 6 grid on Easy is a gentle first try for children and anyone new to loop puzzles. Move up a size when the loops start to feel quick.
Can I make a whole booklet?
Yes. Choose up to 10 pages with 1, 2 or 4 puzzles on each, so up to 40 different puzzles in one PDF. Answers go on pages at the end, six to a page, and you can switch them off. US Letter and A4 are both supported.
